NINI Library is setup by the Inland waterways Authority of India (IWAI) to develop human resource for Inland Water transport Sector. The institute provides induction, up gradation and professional development training to the manpower for manning, operating inland vessels and to the IWAI staff for development of waterways and for repair and maintenance of vessels.

Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) -23rd Edition has been followed to classify documents.

NINI uses e-Granthalaya 4.0 to automate their library functions and manage their collections. e-Granthalaya: A Digital Agenda for Automation and Networking of Government Libraries - is a Digital Platform developed and maintained by National Informatics Centre, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India. Under the platform, NIC Provides Library Management Software with Digital Library Module and Cloud Hosting facility to Government Libraries on request basis. The Software is a Cloud Ready Application; and uses PostgreSQL - an Open Source DBMS as back-end solution. The Software is multi-lingual, UNICODE compliant, provides an online data entry solution and compliance with library standards.
